Navy School Buddies

I met John when we were both going through our first Navy Polaris/Poseidon Electronics "A" School together, along with another friend Rudi Dori. All three of us completed our "A" school training and then went on to Polaris/Poseidon Missile "C" School together. We all first stayed together in the same barracks facility in Dam Neck. But during our "C" School years together, we all rented a four bedroom house in Sandbridge Beach, on Sandfiddler Road. We had the ocean out our front window and some additional lakes behind our house at that time. The house was raised up high on pilings to handle storms. It had a bedroom in each corner of the house, a big living room with a fireplace and kitchen area that had balcony out back. We were just down from a local pub. We had a lot of fun living the beach life there as young sailors.

After completing our "C" School training, we all got assigned to SSBN ballistic missile submarines down in Charleston, SC. John and I ended up renting a two bedroom apartment together down there in a small town called Goose Creek, just outside the gate of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base there. When I was a sea, John was in port and vise versa. But there were times we were in port at the same time. I remember one time giving up smoking just before going to sea; I gave John all my cartons of Marlboro Cigarets. I had to quit then, because I was not going to pay $50 for one pack of cigarets - no way.

While in Goose Creek, we used to routinely have barbecue cookouts. Everyone would come visit us in between patrol cycles. We had some really good times together, the three of us: John Wunn, Rudi Dori, and myself (Andy Reese).

But things in the military, my ship went into the shipyards up in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. So I end up moving out of our apartment located in Goose Creek. I tried to stay in touch with John over the years. I heard he re-enlisted after his initial six year hitch.

Ever since then, I have tried to find my old Navy Buddies over the years. I tried to search the Internet every so many years, but could never find John. I found Rudi Dori though. Well today, I reach out to Rudi to see if he had found anything on John over the years and he had not heard anything. So I did another Internet search and came across John's obituary. I am sorry that we were not able to make contact earlier. He was a very good friend to Rudy and myself. Our thoughts are with John and his family.
