Obituary

Mr. John Adams Darby, 83, of Coldwater, MS passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Darby was born on March 27, 1937 in Montgomery County, AL to the late Vernal Mae Adams Darby and Thomas Roy Darby. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant before his discharge. Sergeant Darby served as Yardmaster with Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement, and was a member of the American Legion, Post 19, the Marine Corps Association and Marine Corps League. He also served as the Veteran's Service Officer for Tate County for many years and was recognized as Tate County's Citizen of the Year in 2016. Sergeant Darby was a member of First Baptist Church in Coldwater. He was proud Marine who dedicated much of his life providing assistance to his fellow service members, but above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose absence will be felt by many.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his loving family which includes his wife of 64 years, Rebecca Bunch Darby of Coldwater, MS; three daughters, Deborah Ann Hadskey (Eddie) and Danita Denson (Bo), both of Senatobia, MS, and Denise Todd of Hernando, MS; three sons, David Elliott Darby (Jackie) of Rossville, TN, John Waldren Darby (Mary) of Hernando, MS, and Frank Allen Darby of Southaven, MS; one brother, Louis Darby of Olive Branch, MS; thirteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Darby; his sister, Eunice Zippay; and his parents.

A very special "Thank You" is extended to SouthernCare Hospice for the genuine care and loving attention which was given to the entire Darby family.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at 11 am in the First Baptist Church in Coldwater, MS with Rev. Bob Maddux officiating. Interment will follow in Senatobia Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, from 6 pm - 8 pm in the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Marine Corps League.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.

I spent many summer days at the Darby home growing up. Lots of bike riding and basketball. He allowed us girls to play inside/outside, and listen to Elvis records to our hearts content! My most memorable childhood moments of Mr. Darby is when he came to my rescue after a dog bite (thanks to that handsome - yet sneaky pup - 'Lad').... and again during a horse-ride gone bad! He made those days much less frightening for that young version of me. And that manicured lawn ...he always kept it looking so nice :D
Prayers for strength, comfort and peace.

He was most helpful in getting Jiggs Franks into the V A home in Oxford. His wife & I really appreciated his help! Very good guy. He will be missed. Know my parents knew him and I had heard of "John Darby' all my life. Patsy Franks Hensley-Arkabutla.
