Obituary for Rebecca Sue Wilkie (Scruggs)

Rebecca Sue Scruggs Wilkie, 87, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Sardis Community Nursing Home in Sardis, MS.

Mrs. Wilkie, known as “Sue” by her family and friends, was born in Oxford, MS, on January 1, 1934, to Bessie Jones and Ernest C. Scruggs.

Sue began her educational journey in Sardis and was a 1951 graduate of Sardis High School. She was always a high achiever, and while attending high school, she worked parttime at Bank of Sardis. Upon graduating, she continued to work for sixteen years, fulltime at the bank, saving money to go to college.

In 1967, Sue enrolled at Northwest Jr. College, followed by attending Ole Miss, where she received a B.S., M.S., and PhD, in accounting. Her love for education continued as she began her teaching career, briefly teaching at Ole Miss, before moving to Rhodes College, in Memphis, where she was on the faculty for many years.

Sue served as pianist at Enid Baptist Church, as she continued work at First Baptist Church in Sardis, MS. where she was an active member for most of her life.

Sue is survived by one nephew, Lee Scruggs (Mary) of Starkville, MS; her sister-in-law, Dot Scruggs of Sardis, MS and numerous cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Legge, to whom she was married until his death in 1984 and her husband, Robert Wilkie, to whom he was also married until his death.

Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis, MS, on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 – Dept # 142, Memphis, TN 38105.
