Obituary for Mildred Arlene Moore (Hardy)

Mildred Arlene Hardy Moore, 94, died at the home of her daughter Carol Bullard in Pope, MS on April 16th, 2020.

Born on May 22, 1925 in Pope, Miss. to George Dewey Hardy and Cecily Arlene Packer Hardy, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, James Hal Moore, Sr., her daughter Margaret Moore Acosta and her siblings, Dovie Hardy Buel, Kay Hardy Chable, James Hardy and Charles Hardy.
A 1943 graduate of Hinds County Agricultural High School, Mildred studied Business and Music at Hinds County Junior College. Married on June 1st, 1947 to James Hal Moore, Mildred resided in Pope where she and James Hal raised 5 children. She was an active partner in the family farm, agricultural supply business and grocery store.

Mildred and her sisters sang religious and popular music as a trio while growing up. Mildred nurtured a love of music in her children, making sure they all had piano lessons and participated in school band. A talented seamstress, Mildred designed and created a multitude of dance costumes, pageant gowns and majorette costumes for her daughters. She supported her children’s activities and was involved in auxiliary organizations supporting those activities, including Panola County 4H clubs and South Panola High School Band Boosters. She was also a board member of both the Mississippi FFA Alumni Association and the National FFA Alumni Association.

Involvement in her local community was very important to Mildred and she was a member and held leadership roles in many organizations. As a recognition of her community service, she was the 1992 Batesville Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball Queen. She was active in the Red Cross for many years and served as organizer of their Blood Drives in Panola County. In 1972 she was co-chair of the Pope Centennial Celebration, organized by the Pope Woman’s Club. She also served several terms as President of the Pope Woman’s Club. Active in the Panola County Farm Bureau she served as a Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation District Women’s Chairman. A member of the DAR, she served as Chapter Regent of the James Gilliam Chapter. She was a Panola County Election Commissioner in the 1980s and 1990s. A member of Pope United Methodist Church, Mildred served as a Lay Speaker in Northern Mississippi.

A lifelong gardener and lover of flowers, Mildred began participating in garden club activities after retirement. Known for her award-winning Iris and Roses in flower show competitions, she was also a Master Flower Show Judge Emeritus. She was a member of and served as President for the both the Batesville Garden Club and Charleston’s Magnolia Garden Club. She served as the Ways and Means Chairman for the Garden Clubs of Mississippi and a Life Member of The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, The Deep South Garden Clubs and The National Garden Clubs.

Mildred is survived by her children, Arlene (Mike) Baker of Mt. Dora, FL; Carol (Rickey) Bullard of Pope; Jane (Harold) Hall of Simpsonville, SC; Hal of Nesbit, MS, and Son in Law Tony Acosta of Winnfield, LA. Grandchildren Lee (Dana) Hall of Greensboro, NC; Margaret (Brian) Aubrey of Charleston, SC; Adrienne (Jamie) Daughtry of Pineville, LA; Elizabeth (Jason) Pauley of Morgantown, WV; Angeline (Josh) DiBenedetto of Winnfield, LA and Ming Bullard of Pope, MS. Twelve great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside service, officiated by Mildred’s nephew Rev. Charles Hardy of Heber Springs, Ar., was held on April 19, 2020 at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were her sons in law Rickey Bullard, Tony Acosta, and Mike Baker, her grandson Ming Bullard, and grandsons in law Josh DiBenedetto and Jamie Daughtry.
