Obituary for John Carter Jackson
Mr. John Carter Jackson, 53, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020, at his home in Southaven, MS.
Carter was born on July 23, 1966 in Jackson, MS. He grew up in Hazlehurst, where he was a member of First Baptist Church and their youth choir. Carter was a 1984 graduate of Copiah Academy in Gallman, MS, where he was a member of the band and student conductor. He attended Ole Miss as a member of the band and Concert Singers and graduated salutatorian from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Atlanta, GA.
He spent his entire life in service to others as a first responder and a licensed funeral director for over 25 years as he helped individuals and families through difficult circumstances. Carter was a member of The Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice as a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP). He was also a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and the state associations for Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas. He served as a mortuary officer with the federal Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT), Region IV, where he assisted with recovery efforts following 9/11 and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Carter was a member of Delta Psi (Phi Chapter) and Pi Sigma Eta fraternities. He participated in efforts to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the traveling Vietnam Memorial. In his spare time, he enjoyed portraying mortuary practitioners during Civil War re-enactments and was a contributor to the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum. He was a member of Longview Heights Baptist Church.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 24 years, Pam Crump Jackson and his son, Benjamin Carter Jackson, both of Southaven; his parents, John and Rebecca Jackson and his sister, Rebecca Jackson Feldman, all of Greenville, SC.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at 11 am in the Senatobia Chapel of Ray-Nowell Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Sinquefield officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, from 5 pm - 8 pm in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123; the Woodruff-Fontaine House Museum, 680 Adams Avenue, Memphis, TN 38105; or to local first responders.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.
