Obituary for Jack Ray Jr.

Mr. Jack Ray, Jr., 89, of Sardis, MS passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, TN.

Mr. Ray was born on September 28, 1930 in Sardis, MS to the late Jewel Matthews Ray and Jack Ray, Sr. He graduated from Sardis High School before proudly serving his country in the Korean War with the United States Air Force. Following his active duty service, Mr. Ray served with the National Guard. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees and served as a North Delta School Board Trustee. He worked in various roles during his life having served with Mississippi Power and Light, Beard Truck Lines, and Panola Manufacturing Company, but he is best remembered as the owner and operator of Sardis Service Center, also known as Jack's Amoco. In recent years, Jack spent his time farming and raising cattle. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Fox News and especially enjoyed his afternoon visits with his Coffee Club. Above all, he loved his family dearly and cherished the time he was able to spend with each of them. He was a devoted husband and loving father, brother, and grandfather who will be missed dearly.

Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife of 65 years, Shirley Beard Ray of Sardis, MS; two daughters, Beverly Ray Patton (Keith) of Batesville, MS, Robyn Ray Snellgrove (Al) of Luverne, AL; two sons, Tony Ray (Kimberly) of Tupelo, MS, and Rusty Ray of Sardis, MS; his sister, Virginia Ray Taylor of Memphis, TN; seven grandchildren, Cathryn Patton McKee (David), Leigh-Taylor Patton Unruh (Justin), Anna Ray Snellgrove Hilburn (Matthew), Sarah Cathryn Snellgrove, Jack Ray, John Simmons Noe, and Zade Charleson Simmons; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at 2 pm in the Sardis United Methodist Church with Bro. Hal Johnson and Rev. David Laird officiating. Interment will follow in Davis Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the Sardis Chapel of Ray-Nowell Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, from 5 pm - 7 pm, and again on Thursday from 1 pm - 2 pm in the church.
