Obituary for Betty Hawkins Flint

Mrs. Betty Hawkins Flint, 91, of Batesville, MS passed way on Monday, March 30, 2020 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS.

Betty was born on June 30, 1928 in Madison County, MS to Pearl and Viola Hawkins. She grew up in rural Farmhaven prior to finishing high school in Canton. In 1950, as a recent graduate of Mississippi University for Women, she moved to Batesville to start the first Home Economics department. She remained deeply connected to many of the students that she taught in those early years.

In Batesville, she soon met her husband of 57 years, Armistead Flint. On June 17, 1951, they were married in Canton, MS. Together they had four children - Nona Beth, Edwin, Jr., Barry, and Sadie Rose.
As her children grew, Betty returned to work serving as the South Panola School District’s Food Service Manager for 23 years. She worked diligently with her team to make sure thousands of children were fed well each day.

As a woman of strong faith, she served as a loving and loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of Batesville. She was a choir member for over 30 years and volunteered for numerous service roles.

Betty treasured her membership in the DAR; tending to, arranging, and sharing flowers from her garden, and volunteering in her community. In her later years, she was proud to be recognized by the Batesville Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow, an honor which recognizes those who made outstanding service to their communities. This fellowship meant so much because her husband had received the award prior to his death. They believed in living by example…lives of faith, service, and love.

She is survived by her siblings, Evelyn Lilly of Greensburg, LA; Mary Hawkins-Butler of Madison; Lee Hawkins of Madison; Also survived by her children Nona Rogers and husband Steve of Huntsville, AL; Edwin A. Flint, Jr. of Batesville; Barry and wife, Tammy of Batesville; Sadie and husband Rod, of Monroe, GA. Her grandchildren Cole Flint and wife, Amanda; Jonathan “Fred” Flint and wife Milli; Matthew Rogers and wife, Anna Laura; Anna Claire Rogers and Barry Kate Huene. She had four adorable great-grandchildren, Hardy, Speer, Elli Rollins and Andi Bell as well as many precious nieces and nephews who meant so much to her.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Armistead Flint, Sr.; her parents Pearl and Viola Hawkins; her sister Bobbie Hillman and her brother Harry Hawkins.

A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2020, in Batesville Magnolia Cemetery. The family will host a celebration of her life at a later date to share with family and friends in rejoicing for her eternal life with our Heavenly Father.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mrs. Flint's memory to the First United Methodist Church, 119 Panola Avenue, Batesville, MS 38606 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
