Obituary for Mary Carolyn Powell

Mrs. Mary Carolyn Frayser Powell, 81, died on Friday, October 11, 2019, at her home surrounded by family and longing to be in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Carolyn was born on October 27, 1937, in Senatobia to George Garland and Dorothy Murphree Frayser.

Her family, friends, and community will remember her for treasured family gatherings at her home, her faithful service to her church and community, as well as her southern genteel character.

Carolyn attended Senatobia High School, Northwest Mississippi Junior College, and Memphis State University where she received her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She was a school teacher for 30 years, 24 years of which were as a second grade teacher for the Senatobia School system. She also was instrumental in helping her husband, Sanford, establish Wee Care Child Development Center, Inc.

A hardworking mother of three boys, she modeled integrity both in her home as an immaculate housekeeper as well as in the community. Her untiring work with the Gideon’s Auxiliary, her instrumental leadership with the National Day of Prayer, and her faithful membership and service as a children’s Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Senatobia will be long remembered.

In her healthiest days, Carolyn loved working in her garden, and she made sure her boys knew the proper way to push mow the many acres without cutting corners. Carolyn and her husband of 62 years, Sanford, enjoyed RV camping with friends, attending Billy Graham’s Cove conferences, vacationing with her children and grandchildren during summer breaks, and entertaining church groups, friends, and family at her home. A devoted wife, sister, mother, and daughter, she took faithful care of her aging parents, kept grandchildren, gathered with her cousins, kept close contact with her sister and sisters-in-law, and took great care for the health and welfare of her family.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Sanford; three sons, Lee (Phyllis Scott), George (Allison Bradley), and Chris (Jana James); as well as grandchildren Lee (Alisha Sartin), Brandon (Lindsey Helmes), Hunter, Clayton (Betsy Battle), Holly, Hayden, Emily and Seth; and two great-granddaughters, Addyson Elizabeth and Nora Kate; sister, Elizabeth Ann Hawkins-Burt and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents as well as a baby sister, Peggy Joyce Frayser.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 21, with a 12:00 PM Celebration of Life Service to follow at Senatobia First Baptist Church, 317 Ward Street. Rev. Clay Moore and Rev. Chris Williams will officiate. Interment will be in Senatobia Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the Powells’ grandsons Lee, Brandon, Hunter, Clayton, Hayden, and Seth; and honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters Holly and Emily.

Memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 99, Senatobia, MS 38668.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ray-Nowell Funeral Home.
